1992 Pinnacle Chicago Cubs

Pinnacle was a brand made by the Score Company and marked their entrance into the high end card market. Pinnacle had a short lived run with only 7 sets (1992-1998).

These cards feature black borders on the front surrounded by a white frame with a full color photo inside. The players name and team are located along the bottom. The players position and the Pinnacle logo can be found along the top border. The backs are horizontal and feature a closeup photo along with stats, team logo and biographical information.

The 1992 Pinnacle baseball card set consisted of 620 baseball cards that measure 2-1/2" by 3-1/2". An anti-counterfeit device appears in the bottom border of each card back. A special ribbed plastic lenticular detector card was made available that allowed the user to view the anti-counterfeit device and unscramble the coding with the word "Pinnacle" appearing.

This 30-card boxed set features top rookies of the 1992 season, with at least one player from each team. A total of 180,000 sets were produced.

Rookie Idols

This 18-card insert set is a spin-off on the Idols subset featured in the regular series. The cards were randomly inserted in Series II. The set features full-bleed color photos of 18 rookies along with their pick of sports figures or other individuals who had the greatest impact on their careers. The fronts carry a close-up photo of the rookie superimposed on an action game shot of his idol.

Team Pinnacle

This 12-card, double-sided insert set features the National League and American League All-Star team as selected by Pinnacle. The standard-size cards were randomly inserted in Series I packs. The cards feature illustrations by sports artist Chris Greco with the National League All-Star on one side and the corresponding American League All-Star by position on the other. The words "Team Pinnacle" are printed vertically down the left side of the card in red for American League on one side and blue for National League on the other.

Team 2000

This 80-card standard-size set focuses on young players who were projected to be stars in the year 2000. Cards 1-40 were inserted in Series 1 jumbo packs while cards 41-80 were featured in Series 2 jumbo packs. The insertion rate was three per jumbo pack in either series.

1909 T204 Ramly Chicago Cubs

T204's (or, "Ramlys") were issued in 1909 by the Mentor Co. of Boston with their Ramly and T.T.T. Turkish cigarettes. The cards in this 121-card set measure approximately 2" by 2 1/2". This set is one of the most distinguished ever produced, containing ornate gold borders around a black and white portrait of each player. There are spelling errors, and two distinct backs, "Ramly" and "TTT", are known.

1911 T3 Turkey Red Chicago Cubs

The cards in this 126-card set measure approximately 5 ¾ x 8" in size compared to the tiny 1 7/16 x 2 5/8" that were made to fit the small cigarette packs of the era. The 1911 Turkey Red set of color cabinet style cards, designated T3 in the American Card Catalog, is named after the brand of cigarettes with which it was offered as a premium. Cards 1-50 and 77-126 depict baseball players while the middle series (51-76) portrays boxers. The cards themselves are not numbered but were assigned numbers for ordering purposes by the manufacturer. This attractive set has been reprinted in 2 1/2" by 3 1/2" form.

There are five different card backs in this terrific issue, a Turkey Red advertisement back showing a pack of cigarettes and four different checklist backs. Three of the four checklist backs are very similar; the numerical sequence is the only real difference. One has 1-75 depicted, another has 1-76, and the third has 51-126. All three state, at the top, that you should "Order by number only" and that you can exchange 10 Turkey Red coupon vouchers (that were inserted into cigarette packs), or 25 Fed or Old Mill coupons for a player/boxer of your choice. The address to ship the coupons to was listed as "Drawer S, Jersey City, NJ". The offer expired on June 30, 1911. The 4th checklist back has no ordering instructions or address and is considered the scarcest of the five backs.

Thirty seven of the baseball subjects share the same image seen in the T206 set. Four of the baseball players have 2 versions, #28 Harry McIntyre is listed with Brooklyn and also as Brooklyn/Chicago. Card #90 (Mickey Doolin) has another version with his corrected name Mickey Doolan. In addition, card #112 (Dode Paskert) is listed with Cincinnati as well as Cincinnati/Philadelphia, and finally card #144 (Fred Tenney) is listed with NY as well as NY/Boston.

Could Soriano be the next Cubs player to go?

ESPNChicago.com reported that the Cubs talked to "at least eight AL teams over the last six weeks" regarding Soriano, a clear signal that he's mostly viewed as a designated hitter. His defense is terrible all that hopping around doesn’t help (playing left field and committed seven errors and posted a .965 fielding percentage in 128 games last season) also noticed he won’t play small ball and that hurts a team always swinging for the fences. Guess im just old fashion baseball fan!

Rizzo was recently named the Padres' top prospect for 2012

Cashner and minor league outfielder Kyung-Min Na were sent to the Padres for first baseman Anthony Rizzo and minor league right-hander Zach Cates. I guess that means where out of the running for Fielder but the new GM Jed Hoyer really likes Rizzio only time will tell if it was a good move.

Illinois made its first appearance in Pasadena in 12 years, led by linebacker Dick Butkus and fullback Jim Grabowski. Illinois trailed 7-0 before Jim Plankenhorn's 32-yard field goal with one second remaining in the first half put the Fighting Illini on the scoreboard. Illinois came out strong in the second half, grinding out touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to wear down the Huskies, 17-7. Grabowski earned MVP honors, gaining 125 yards and scoring one touchdown.

Distributed by Hassan cigarettes in 1912 this card is a close relative of the T205. T202 baseball card set consists of 132 cards that measure 2¼" by 5½" when unfolded. All have similar cards in the T205 set. Many of the players are repeated in this set.

The difference between T202 cards and T205 cards is the team logos are missing and borders are white instead of gold.

The cards were produced in 2 factories, 649-black-back & 30-red-back.

Card backs follow the format of the fronts. Each player card has a biography on the back, but unlike the T205 cards they resemble, there are no lines of statistics used here. The center panel even has accompanying text which describes the action taking place on the photo shown on the card front. All three elements have a Hassan advertisement below the text.

The set was released in two series, 1-88 and 89-154 which are of short print.(more difficult to obtain). The players within each series are conveniently numbered in alphabetical order. The catalog number for this set is F418-3.

The 2009 Topps T206 Baseball set is a throwback to the old T206 Tobacco cards of the early 1900's. In fact, this set marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1909 set.

The base set will have 300 total with 50 Short Print base cards that will be inserted one in every four packs.

The card design is very clean and simple. The player photo stands out on the T-206 cards because of a muted background.

Ron Santo is voted into the Hall of Fame

Ron Santo was elected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday with 93.8 percent of the vote from the Golden Era committee.

Nominees needed at least 75 percent of the vote to be elected (12 or more). Santo receiving 15 of 16 votes.

Santo will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 22

Santo will be the 47th Hall of Famer to have played for the Cubs.

Former Cubs teammate and Hall of Famer Billy Williams was on the committe that elected Santo. He said that the discussion, prior to Sunday's vote, went far beyond Santo's perfrormance on the field.

"Everybody saw the numbers, the home runs, the Gold Gloves. But I think they looked at (him) with a different view." Williams said.

Santo is the first Cubs third baseman to represent the team. During his 15-year career, he was a nine-time All-Star who amassed 342 home runs and five Gold Glove awards.

Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Maricahl echoed the sentiment of many, that it was a shame Santo was not still alive to appreciate the honor.

"He played to win," Marichal said. "He gave 100 percent on the field, at the plate, running the bases. He was the type of player I wish I could have had on my side."

Results of the voting: Santo (15 votes, 93.75%); Jim Kaat (10 votes, 62.5%); Gil Hodges (9 votes, 56.25%); Minnie Minoso (9 votes, 56.25%); Tony Oliva (8 votes, 50%); Buzzie Bavasi, Ken Boyer, Charlie Finley, Allie Reynolds and Luis Tiant each received fewer than three votes.

The 1991 Topps Stadium Club baseball card set includes 600 standard size cards which were issued in two series of 300 cards each. This set is the first premium quality set issued by Topps. With full-color borderless photos and slick, glossy card stock it made this set one of my favorits. The back of each card has the basic biographical information as well as making use of the Fastball BARS system and an inset photo of the player's Topps rookie card.

I have decided to start putting up some vintage cubs scorecards. This particular one today was from a game in 1946 the defending national champs Chicago Cubs crushed the Phillies by 12. Now you ask yourself how I know which game it was well let’s look a little closer. Starting with the champs cover lets go page by page.

Baby Ruth 5 cents come on what happened. Back in the day they would sell plastic horns that you would blow in and it made a hell of a racket. So my friend dared me to blow the horn at some poor fellow while he was drinking beer, you guessed it beer flew all over then he chased me forever (about 10 minutes) but never caught me until about a week later had to give him money for his dry cleaning bill and only had a quarter that’s all he got. I did promise that I would never seek up on him agian.

Bert Wilson was a play-by-play broadcaster for Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs from 1944 to 1955. He was an unabashed "homer", known for two catchphrases: "I don't care who wins, as long as it's the Cubs!" and "Sic 'em, Cubs!" He also invented a short-lived catchphrase for the double play combination of Ernie Banks, Gene Baker and Steve Bilko: "Bingo to Bango to Bilko".

1968 Topps has one of the most interesting backgrounds ever and appears to be a burlap design which featured a color photograph of the player surrounded in a round corner border. The players name is located at the bottom of the card. The players team and position are also located at the bottom of the card but inside a colored circle.

The backs are similar to the popular 1967 set, except yellow instead of green and are vertical just as they were in 1966 with the typical stats, biography and fun trivia questions and answers,see how many you can get right.

I was going though a case of cards on Wednesday when this oddball of woody popped up. This is the only card from Score Board in my collection and I have no idea when or how I got this one.

The 1996-97 All Sport Past Present and Future set contains original vintage and rookie cards of the top athletes from baseball, basketball, football and hockey as well as new cards of tomorrow's stars from each sport.There was also a gold parallel produced for this set. Series one gold cards were inserted 1:10 packs while series two had gold cards inserted at a 1:5 ratio.
