1916 Sporting News M101-5 series Chicago Cubs

This 200-card set measure approximately 1 5/8 by 3". The 1916 M101-5 series of black and white glossy numbered baseball cards is very similar in style to M101-4. The set was offered as a marketing promotion by C.C. Spink and Son, publishers of The Sporting News. Most of the players in this set also appear in the M101-4 set.

1940 Play Ball "Shoeless" Joe Jackson R-335

Not often do I get vintage sox cards but the guy that I was trading with had this card just couldn't pass it up.

The R-cards, or gum cards, Goudey, Play Ball, Bowman and Topps were some of the most successful cards in the history of collecting.

The cards in this 240-card series measure approximately 2 1/2" by 3 1/8". Gum Inc. improved upon its 1939 (for some odd reason no Cubs cards were included in the 39 and 41 sets) design by enclosing the 1940 black and white player photo with a frame line and printing the player's name in a panel below the picture (often using a nickname).

1937 Diamond Matchbooks (U-unc) Chicago Cubs Set

This 21-player Cubs subset (U-unc) was issued by the Diamond Match Company in late 1936 and early 1937. Each player's cover is featured in three different colors; red, green, and blue. All player photos have shoulders shot. The set was released with two different colors of ink, brown and black.

This particular Cubs subset is fun and fairly easy to collect. It’s important to note that the 1936 U3-1 set is similar and can be very confusing I will show a blow up of all the different bios and show the difference in the sets in next week’s post.
