Basic Features

The front side of the card showcased a striking black and white image of the player, prominently displaying his name and team name beneath the portrait. On the reverse side, collectors would find a comprehensive checklist of the entire set, allowing enthusiasts to track their collection easily. A unique feature noted on the back stated that each card was individually wrapped inside a piece of caramel, adding a nostalgic and sweet twist to the collecting experience.

1921 Homemade Caramels Recipe:

Ingredients:

• 1 Tablespoon butter softened
• 3 cups heavy whipping cream
• ⅔ cup sweetened condensed milk about 1/2 of a 14-ounce can
• 2 cups granulated sugar
• 2 cups light corn syrup
• ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:

• Line a 9-inch square baking dish with foil. Butter the foil. Set aside.
• In the top of a double boiler, combine the heavy cream with the sweetened condensed milk. Heat pan over low heat until milk and cream are warm. Keep on a low simmer, stirring occasionally.
• In a large 3-4 quart saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Heat over medium heat until boiling, stirring with a wooden spoon. Attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan.
• Very slowly, over medium heat, add 1/4 cup of the warmed cream mxture to the boiling sugar mixture, while stirring with a wooden spoon. Wait about 3 minutes between each addition of cream (this process will take about 45 minutes). Be sure to continuously stir the mixture.
• Once all the additions of the warm cream have been added, monitor the candy thermometer until it reaches 242 degrees F.
• Remove from heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract. Quickly pour the caramel into the buttered foil-lined baking dish.
• Allow caramel to set at room temperature for several hours.
• To cut the caramels, Remove the foil and cut.
• Imagine wrapping candy in 1921 Oxford Confectionery (E253) baseball cards. You've just journeyed back to the golden age of baseball collecting—how amazing would that be?

1924 Diaz Cigarros (N258)

Basic Features

These cards highlight a black and white collection made in Cuba back in 1924, featuring a white band at both the top and bottom. The team name is shown at the top, while the player's name is located at the bottom. In the center, there's a portrait of the player. Flip the card over, and you'll find some details in Spanish; this set is dedicated solely to pitchers from the Major Leagues.

The N-Card designation is mainly associated with sets from the 19th Century today. Consequently, even though this particular set keeps its original N258 classification, it is not part of the 19th Century. This is the reason why the American Card Catalog needs to be updated; many sets are misclassified under incorrect ACC Designations and should be revised by a committee that understands baseball.

Basic Features

Produced by Curtis Ireland Candy Co., located in St. Louis, MO, these unnumbered cards feature a sepia-toned image of a player, bordered by a white frame, and were distributed with the company’s “All Star Bars.” A printed replica of the autograph is superimposed on the photograph. The back of this set advertises a contest that encourages collectors to submit cards for prizes. The 1923 C. Ireland Candy (E123) set is identical to the 1923 Willard Chocolate (V100) set. This collection features some fantastic action shots of baseball players, such as Ty Cobb. If you pay attention to the background, you can't help but wonder where that game took place back in the day. Most likely, it was on a farm field in Michigan, with trees serving as foul poles. It certainly doesn't resemble Tiger Stadium to me.

I don't specifically remember the all Star Bars, but during my childhood, many of my favorite candies were produced by Curtis.

The 1960 Bazooka set consists of 12 panels, each containing three cards, totaling 36 cards. These cards were taken from the bottoms of gum boxes that Topps distributed nationwide that year. All cards have a blank reverse side and are categorized as R414-18. This year marked the introduction of larger boxes featuring panels of three cards, with each player's name, team, and position listed beneath their photo, along with their corresponding numbers. The Glen Hobbie panel can be quite valuable, so be cautious about how you plan to acquire this set. Richie Ashburn is seen wearing a Philly cap in his picture. After the 1959 season, Ashburn was traded to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for three players. He subsequently became the center fielder for the North Siders during the 1960 and 1961 seasons, which explains why he's wearing a different cap.

To ensure you don't purchase a counterfeit piece of history, always obtain a professionally graded card from a trusted seller. Graded cards are expected to appreciate significantly in value over time.

These discs, released in 1976, are among the toughest ever made. They were distributed by Red Barn Restaurant and produced by MSA. Each disc features four stars on the front and a Red Barn advertisement on the back, which may or may not include an address in Kenosha, Wisconsin. MSA, which stands for Michael Schechter & Associates, collaborated with the Players’ Union to produce these collection. Other 1976 MSA backs featured: Buckmans, Carousel, Crane Potato chips, Dairy Isle, Orbaker’s, Safelon, Sweet William, Towne Club, and Wiffle Ball, along with some blank backs.

The most effective approach to identifying distinctions involves careful comparison of key characteristics.

As you can see, there are variations between the 1935–1936 U3-1 and the 1936–1937 U3-2.
Let's take a closer look at it using the great cub Stan Hack as our example.


The blue one in this example is the 1935-36 U3-1.
The red one is the 1936-37 U3-2.



The first major clue is that the pictures of Hack 1936–37 U3-2 are of the head and shoulders, while the early release is a whole body shot.



The best way to tell the difference, because some of the pictures are alike, is in the bio. As you can see, the 1936-37 U3-2 bio mentions the 1936 season. Well, that concludes this series on matchbooks. If you have any questions, just email me and I will be happy to answer them.

1911 Helmar Stamps (T332)

Basic Features

The Helmar Stamps set featured miniature paper inserts that came with packages of Helmar Cigarettes. These distinctive items showcased small black and white images of players set against vibrant decorative backgrounds. The player's name and team were displayed at the bottom on a nameplate. Similar to other stamp issues, the backs of these inserts are completely blank. Besides the numerous players depicted in the set, the frames are remarkable due to their variety, with as many as 50 different frames used around the players' images in the collection.

Basic Features

Post Cereal baseball cards were included on the backs of different cereal boxes. Displaying the player's statistics along with a photo on the front. Backs were blank. They can be distinguished from Jell-O cards of the same year by the red horizontal line that separates the statistics, which extends beyond the blue stars, and the fact that Jell-O cards are smaller in size, measuring 1/4" narrower. Additionally, an album was created by Post to store the cards, which had the capacity to hold only 120 cards.
