The 1956 Topps Baseball card set is considered by many to be one of the most attractive and highly desired sets ever produced.

Number of Cards

The 1956 Topps set had 340 cards, with 22 Cubs players and 14 variations.

Size of Cards

This would be the last year that Topps cards measured 3 ¾ by 2 5/8

Basic Features

The design is very similar to the 1955 Topps baseball card set. A full color portrait combined with a full body action pose makes up the basic image.

The 1956 Topps Baseball card backs provide a wealth of information about the player, including biographical and statistical data, in addition to the exquisitely designed card front. The well-known three-panel comic strips offer extra details on the athlete that are portrayed.

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider.. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.

1955 Doubleheaders Topps first sub-set & Topps regular issue

1955 Topps Double-Headers (Doubleheaders)
Patterned after the famous Mecca Double Folders issued in the early 1900's, these colorful 2 1/16" x 4 7/8" cards are actually 2-cards-in-1! Each one featured a main image with "reusable legs," inviting collectors to fold the top half over and see the alternate player, check photo's. Card backs included brief stats for both.

Interesting enough on their own, Topps' Doubleheader artist upped the ante by including contiguous stadium scenes on the background of consecutive cards. Can you pick out some of the differant old time stadiums like Ebbets Field, Yankee Stadium and Fenway can you spot Wrigley field?

Cubs error cards

An error card refers to a sports card that features a mistake, which could be a misspelling or an image of a player who is not the Cub player indicated on the card. In earlier decades, card manufacturers typically rectified these errors upon discovery. This practice resulted in scenarios where either the corrected or the erroneous version of the card, depending on the timing of the error's identification and the quantity of each variant that circulated, commanded significant premiums in the secondary market.

abbreviated Terms or Acronyms

  • UER-No more cards with the correct information will ever be produced.
  • COR-means Corrected Error, so there are different variations.

1956 Topps Cubs Team

The 1956 Topps Cubs team card features three different front designs. Collectors often call these the "dated," "undated," and "centered" cards. The initial version displayed a team photo from the previous year, correctly marked as "1955 Chicago Cubs." However, to avoid confusion with a card labeled "1955" in a 1956 set, Topps decided to reprint these cards, covering up the date. This led to the team name being misaligned in the black box where it was placed. Eventually, Topps released a third version that centered the team name properly in the box.
